Texas Rangers news: A shutout low, a hero rises, and the Angels just won’t stop

Texas fell flat in New York, the AL West is heating up, and even former Rangers are adding to the misery.

The Texas Rangers are in another one of their terrible runs. Their offense, which has been so bad that the team fired its offensive coordinator at the beginning of this month, is still having quite a few problems scoring runs.

On Thursday, Bruce Bochy’s squad was shut out for the sixth time this season. That equals the number of times they were shut out last year. And it’s not like the Rangers' offense was fantastic in 2024.

How bad are things in 2025? The Rangers didn’t just get shut out, they lost 1-0 thanks to a home run by Yankee second baseman Jorbit Vivas. It’s worth pointing out that Vivas is not a budding Aaron Judge. Not only was it his first career major league homer, but he also entered the game slugging .182 on  the season. The good news is that Bochy’s squad gets to take on the Chicago Whitesox next.

Former Texas Rangers star plays hero

If the 1-0 loss to get swept by the Yankees wasn’t bad enough, the fact that one of their former outfielders led the Seattle Mariners to a win over the aforementioned Whitesox on Wednesday night was an insult to injury.

Leody Taveras, who hasn’t exactly been tearing things up since going to Seattle, delivered a game-winning two-run homer on Wednesday that helped the M’s extend their AL West lead.

AL West race shakeup

On the one hand, the Rangers’ four-game losing streak is concerning, mainly because the offense has been non-existent this week. On the other hand, at least the Mariners did lose on Thursday, so Texas didn’t lose any ground in the AL West race.

Things are getting very interesting for no other reason than the hottest team in the division right now is the Los Angeles Angels. They’ve won seven in a row, including a sweep of the A’s, who, after looking like a surprise contender, have lost 9 in a row.

The Rangers and Angels are now tied for third in the AL West. They are four games behind the Mariners and 1.5 games behind the Houston Astros.

At least the Rangers aren’t the Rockies

Speaking of a Western division, look at what’s happening over in the NL West. While the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, and San Diego Padres are battling it out for a title, the Colorado Rockies are already 23 games out of first.

The Rockies are not only on pace to set a new modern-day record for losses, but they will obliterate that record at this point. Sitting at just 8-42, they have the worst record in baseball by a full seven games and are on pace for just 23 wins in 2025. So, Texas Rangers fans, it could always be worse.
