The Texas Rangers are easing toward season ending territory with heartbreak win followed by heartbreak win and a sub-.500 record halfway through the month of August.
That opens the door for potential September call-ups getting real chances at substantial at-bats in the final 30-35 games of the regular season.
Good news for the Rangers is that they have a selection of high-quality options in Triple-A Round Rock that could get called up to Arlington and make a possible real impact at the big league level.
3 Rangers' prospects ready for the call to MLB when rosters expand next month
Cody Freeman, 3B
Freeman is perhaps on top of Chris Young's call up list when he MLB expands each team's rosters to 28 players on September 1.
Already with a stint in the big leagues in July, Freeman is tearing it up in Round Rock this season slashing .336/.382/.549 with 19 home runs, 71 RBIs, 25 doubles and a .931 OPS in 97 games this year.
He's a leading candidate to be a permanent fixture on the roster next year but when he gets called up this September he will likely experience a platoon situation at both corner infield spots and second base.
Justin Foscue, 1B
Foscue is another member of this possible call-up list that has seen time with the Rangers over the last two seasons. The 26-year-old orignially made his big league debut last season and while his MLB career hasn't been great, he still shows a lot of potential.
His 12 long balls and 49 runs driven in is fourth-best on the Express roster this season. In 75 games, he has mostly played first base but has experience with corner infield spots and second base just like Freeman.
A lot of fans aren't as excited given that he's had chances in the big leagues but I think at this point, they will welcome any potential change that isn't Joc Pederson, Jake Burger or Rowdy Tellez.
Abimelec Ortiz, OF
The 23-year-old outfielder is patiently waiting for his first call to the major leagues and it is possible that it could come in a few weeks. With 20 homers this season, he's spent time between Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Round Rock.
Most of his damage has been done with Double-A Frisco but in his 10 games with the Express this year, he's hitting .379 with four homers and 12 runs driven in. Ortiz was named the Rangers' Minor League Player of the Month in July with a 1.082 OPS, 7 homers, 17 RBIs and a blistering .341 average.
Right now, every aspect of the Rangers' offense is struggling and with the move of Adolis Garcia to the IL earlier this week, Ortiz will be welcomed with opened arms.
