It's getting close to the expanded roster period as the Rangers head into the final 40 games of the season.
On September 1, the team will be using a 40-man roster and 23-year-old 1B/DH Abrimelec Ortiz is making a strong case to be among that group.
Ortiz is checking all the boxes as a minor league power hitter
Most of the talk surrounding Texas Rangers minor league prospects has centered around talented SS Sebastian Walcott, and deservedly so. But fans need to keep a close eye on another young player who is hitting the ball with authority for the RoughRiders right now.
Abrimelec Ortiz is a power-hitting corner infielder and DH who is quickly making his way up through the organization's farm system and is making a case to get a look with the big club in Arlington in a few weeks. Currently ranked as the 18th best prospect in the Rangers system, he was the organization's player of the year in 2023, crushing 33 HRs and driving in 101 runs.
Debuting in 2021 at 19 years old, Ortiz has hit for power at every stop he has made in the minors. He has 16 homers and 56 RBIs for the Frisco RoughRiders with a of .444 slugging percentage and .787 OPS.
He made a brief stop at Triple-A Round Rock early in 2025 and dominated with his four home runs and 13 RBI in just 21 at-bats and was quickly moved closer to Arlington after just seven games.

Ortiz may be the long-term answer for the Rangers at 1B
There isn't much more this young, stout, left-handed-hitting native of Puerto Rico can do to grab the attention of Chris Young and his scouts to be given an opportunity in September.
The current Rangers 1B and DH aren't exactly getting it done with Joc Pederson and Rowdy Tellez combining for just 5 HR and 17RBIs in nearly 200 plate appearances combined.
What is the harm in giving Ortiz a shot? The worst case scenario is still likely better than the production they're getting now, and if he does well, then there is hope for the future.
