3 Rangers prospects we'd like to see called up in September as rosters expand

After a horrific West Coast road trip and now a complete smackdown by legit contenders like the White Sox and Brewers, the future looks bleak for the Texas Rangers. Combine that with the uncertainty surrounding starting pitchers Nathan Eovaldi and Jack Leiter, and it feels like it's time to entertain the very real possibility that this team isn't postseason-worthy. Are you surprised?

That means that the Rangers could find themselves playing out the string in September. If that's the case, there are a handful of promising young minor leaguers who should be called up when rosters expand on September 1 to get a taste of the big leagues for the final few weeks of the season. Here are three Texas farmhands that we would love to see in Arlington if the Rangers fall out of contention.

David Davalillo - SP

Davalillo was named PCL Player of the Week just a few days ago and has been pitching really well for the Round Rock Express. It is a coronation of sorts for the right-hander who has climbed four levels in the farm system this year, advancing from the Arizona Complex League (Rookie) to the Hub City Spartanburgers (High-A), the Frisco RoughRiders (Double-A), and culminating at Triple-A with Round Rock.

His overall numbers (6.15 ERA, 1.58 WHIP) are poor, but with minor leaguers, you are looking for how well they are progressing and how quickly they adapt to each new level. Davalillo has shown he can make the adjustments necessary to get batters out at every level. It would also be a tremendous story for a kid to start the season in Rookie ball and end up at Globe Life Field to wrap up his 2026 season.

Dylan Dreiling - OF

With Sebastian Walcott missing significant time in 2026 with a UCL injury, Dylan Dreiling has been Frisco's most consistent player. He hits for both average (.315) and power (21 HRs and a .527 slugging percentage). At just 23, he hits to all fields and has improved his plate discipline. He is scorching hot right now, coming off a 21-game hitting streak.

Dreiling was the Rangers' 2nd-round draft pick in the 2024 draft out of the University of Tennessee, so big things were expected of him, and he is starting to put it all together for the RoughRiders. It would be great for the fanbase to see the up-and-coming outfielder for the season's final month for some big-league reps.

Sebastian Walcott - SS

The Rangers' top prospect, ranked the No. 9 overall farmhand by MLB Pipeline, has come back from his unfortunate UCL injury before the season and is absolutely tearing up Double-A-level pitching. In 105 at-bats since his return, Walcott is slashing .295/.378/.524 with 12 doubles and 4 jacks.

The Frisco RoughRiders' last game is scheduled for September 13. Why delay the inevitable and go ahead and tease the fanbase with the guy who is supposed to be the next great Texas Ranger? He could get his first taste of major league pitching and begin making the adjustments he will undoubtedly need to make as a 20-year-old phenom. Walcott has proven throughout his minor league career that he can step up and handle whatever comes his way on his path to being a perennial All-Star. Let us see what he is all about.
