The Athletics continue to add to their younger demographic with call up of one of the organization’s recent draft picks.

Entering the season, the A’s were the 8th youngest team in Major League Baseball with an average age of 28 years old. The addition of No. 1 prospect Nick Kurtz, helps shift that average a bit younger.

Kurtz, 22, was drafted last year fourth overall out of Wake Forest where he was started in 176 of his 178 games played. Krutz ended his collegiate career with the Demon Deacons as the program's all-time career leader in walks (189) and walks in a single season (78). He also finished his career a .297 hitter with 62 home runs and 189 runs batted in.

To kick off the 2025 season, Kurtz has been red hot with Triple-A Las Vegas, slashing .321/.385/.655 with 7 home runs, 24 RBIs, 7 doubles and a 1.040 OPS. Where he does tend to get into trouble however is by striking out, with 26 so far this season in 84 at-bats.

The Texas Rangers will likely get the first look at the young lefty during their three-game road trip in Sacramento starting Tuesday. Although Kurtz is not in the lineup for game 1, Athletics shared photos of Kurtz joining the team prior to Tuesday's game.

When the Athletics do officially add Kurtz to the active roster, five of the 26 players will have been born in 2000 or later.

The A’s have always been seen as a younger team as the organization has never really spent money. They draft and then later trade players just to repeat the cycle with new players. Their mindset however has shited in recent seasons at they prepare for a pending move to Las Vegas in 2028 and have started to call up more of their prospects and locking up their stars to extensions.

Regardless of when Kurtz does debut, the Rangers pitching staff will have its hands full this week as the A's offense is off to a hot start. As a team, they have the 11th best average (.248), 4th best slugging percentage (.422), 7th best OPS (.732) and are tied for 7th in home runs (30).
