Every year, the Winter Meetings are held. Anyone who is anybody in a Major League front office meets together to discuss league rules, meet with agents, and much more. This year, the Rangers are looking to shed payroll while also improving the roster.
There are many options to choose from when it comes to the Rangers roster that fit this agenda. Corey Seager, Jacob deGrom and Nathan Eovaldi are all big contracts that have had rumors surrounding them since the Rangers' collapse this season.
While those are huge "Face of the Franchise" names, there is another potential move that would be incredibly painful for fans. Rumors of free agent signings also point to this being an unspoken possibility.
Sebastian Walcott would be the most painful player for Rangers to trade
Sebastian Walcott is the best talent the Rangers farm system has held among the prospect industry since Jurickson Profar. He has been at the top of the system for over a year and holds an unbelievably high price tag that could get a young star who is already MLB-proven.
Walcott has prospect grades highlighted by 65-grade power and a 70-grade arm. He projects to be a middle-of-the-order bat that can play gold glove defense. As Rangers fans are way too familiar with, prospects do not always work out.
Names such as Rougned Odor, Profar and basically any first-round pick from 2002-2017 are proof that the Rangers have a development problem. Walcott looks to be the exception, but when top talent is available, uncomfortable moves have to be made.
With the drafting of Gavin Fien this summer, that signaled that Walcott may not be a lock for shortstop long term. The belief among fans was that whenever Seager's glove declined, it would likely be Walcott's time to shine. Josh Jung's rapid decline made that timer accelerate as well.
A 6'4, 190-pound shortstop that is uber athletic, has high bat speed, can play anywhere on the field, and has a rocket of an arm is extremely rare to find. That body type and archetype consists of top talents such as Gunner Henderson and Bobby Witt Jr. Walcott is a guy who could land a massive trade piece.
Getting hyped for a prospect is normal for baseball fans. Hoarding prospects has shown to be a risky move, as the Orioles displayed in 2025, or it can be as fruitful as the Blue Jays showed in 2025. The Rangers at the deadline showed they are trying to flip over the farm, so why wouldn't they continue that this offseason?
There is certainly a need for more MLB talent right now and Walcott can net something along those lines. When names like Fernando Tatis Jr., Tarik Skubal and Ketel Marte are potentially available, the Rangers at least have to entertain trading their top prospect.
The Skip Schumaker era has already seen the departure of Marcus Semien and could use another star-level bat. Getting a high-level bat is likely at the top of the front offices' plans at the Winter Meetings, along with acquiring a high-end arm as well. Many are available as free agents, but the cost-friendly option would be a trade.
Rangers fans need to brace for the chance that Walcott is moved for one of those top players. While it may be painful, it can lead to great things. While the offseason rumors pointed elsewhere, the Rangers front office has a reputation for making moves out of nowhere.
