What's next for this veteran Rangers' right-hander after suffering rehab setback?

The veteran was pulled from a live BP session on Wednesday after re-aggravated his calf injury that put him on the IL last month.

Everything was going smoothly in right-hander veteran Chris Martin's rehab from a calf injury that the Texas Rangers were hopeful to get back Martin back the final stretch run of the regualr season. However, Martin's calf had different plans.

The 39-year-old suffered the left calf injury during the Detroit series after the All-Star Break on July 21 and at the time was given a 4-6 week timetable for his return. On Tuesday, Martin was scheduled and begun a rehab live BP session at Globe Life Field but it didn't last long. After experiencing some discomfort in that same calf he was shut down.

Accoridng to Dallas Morning News' reporter Shawn McFarland, Martin said his calf was feeling good during the previous weekend's bullpen sessions but the live bullpen was a bit more intense and the calf wasn't ready for that.

It's a certainity that Martin will take a break from throwing right now but that timeline is still unsure. Which likely pushes that timeline back a little bit longer.

Does Martin's recent setback essentially end his season?

Entering Wednesday's series finale against Arizona, there are 40 games remaining in the regular season. Texas is currently in the midst of an intense postseason push with upwards of ten teams still vying for a playoff spot in the American League.

With their playoff chances hovering around 20%, the Rangers have a shot to make a run for one of the AL Wild Card spots but it's also possible they find themselves on the outside looking in by the time Game 162 comes along.

Now for Martin it all determines how long he will be sidelined with no throwing/pitching of any kind after this recent incident. If he is only out for the rest of the week and back to it on Monday then assuming everything goes fine after that, yes, Texas could see him return for the final month of the year.

If Martin's setback last him a full week or more then it could put his season in jeporady due to the potential process he'd need to get back to game strength.

What harm does this do to the Rangers' bullpen setup?

With Chris Young's reinforcements at the trade deadline, it's not as big of a pain. But then you go an throw Robert Garcia's recent sturggles into the mix and I am sure the Rangers would love to have Martin back sooner rather than later.

Martin has been an integral part to the bullpen's success this year. Despite his 1-6 record, he has a 2.36 ERA, two saves and 34 strikeouts in 39 appearances out of the pen for Texas.

Although he's had his shaky outings, Martin is a proven veteran arm that can give Bochy much-needed trust and soldiity in the back of the bullpen. Which is so desperately needed when the offense refuses to put up more than 2-3 runs a game.
