Why key Rangers player could take massive leap in 2025 with new swing and swagger
With fans and pundits salivating over the number of moves that could be made this winter, it is difficult to focus on players who will be returning to their clubs. Potential improvements and regressions are not typically thought of this time of year. But, the Texas Rangers may have a returning piece who could significantly improve.
Catcher Jonah Heim put together a flawed campaign last season. He was an underwhelming part of a lineup that was largely stagnant. A revamped swing and a fresh mindset could potentially help him take a massive leap in 2025.
A recent MLB.com story highlighted Heim's struggles and offered insight into how he may be able to step up his game next season.
“There was a lot mentally going on for me this year,” Heim said. “Probably, honestly, all the accolades from last year, you try to live up to that. When you get off to the slow start like I did, it all kind of builds up on you and gets in your own head. It just kind of spirals from there. Over the last couple of months, I've learned that no matter what, I'm still that player I've proven that I am. I just got to go out and play my game.”

Across 131 games last year, the Buffalo native slashed .220/.267/.336. He bashed 13 home runs and recorded 59 RBIs. These marks were down from 2023, and not reminiscent of his All-Star form. A clear mind could help Heim find his footing, but he will also benefit from a nuanced approach at the dish.
Last season, Heim earned a 36.4 Hard Hit% and a 5.9 Barrel%. Each of these marks were worse than what he posted during the Rangers' World Series campaign.
"I feel like constant tinkering and adjustments have gotten me to a point where I feel like I can step in the box and kind of just compete right now,” Heim said. “Obviously, I want to be able to step in the box and feel confident that I think that I'm better than the pitcher and that I'm going to do some damage, but that all comes with work, and that's what I'm going to try to do this offseason.”
One could assume that these adjustments may help Heim take a big leap offensively. He was quite good in 2023. But, it is possible that he could reach another level with the right tweaks and greater peace of mind. Only time will tell if he's got more to give.
